I took my time writing this song -- I've made more changes, lyrically and musically, to this song, than I have to any other songs I've written. I'm not even settled on this current incarnation, but some of the other songs I was working on just weren't vibin' for me due to the state of affairs when I wrote this at the beginning of the lockdown. It's strange times, and is proving to be a touchstone for each and every person right now in some way, and even though this song is dark and quirky, there's a gentle optimisim to it as well. I hope you like it! Be good to each other, and yourselve
This instrumental was inspired by a lot of things; namely, a failed attempt at making raisin bread in a tiny little oven, along with old school Goombay music, the One Drop Rhythym, M.I.A., and last but not least, the Etch A Sketch Queen, a talented local artist who was nice enough to work with me for the Etch A Sketch Artwork. All music made with guitars, and my normal homemade instruments and sounds. There's a YouTube video on my channel for this song that has the entire Etch A Sketch artwork being made in time lapse. I hope this track makes you feel good!!
Please enjoy my kindergarten-level artwork as you listen to my newly-finished track. Thanks for listening, love y'all!!
Lyrics:
I stay pretty strong out here all alone
But droopy and weepy, a willow tree
No one seems to notice me hanging around
Need some attention 'fore my leaves turn brown
World in slo-mo as my limbs hang low
Waitin' for a breeze to come and shake my leaves
Been around years, so I do have scars
Touch my bark and give your name a carve
I wrote this instrumental over a decade ago, and decided to record it, and add a little extra to the acoustic soundscape. The picture is a pano taken from the top of Mt Whitney, right at sunrise in June 2019.
RIP John Prine!!
I wrote all the guitar parts for this and 90% of the lyrics while alarmingly under the influence last night, barely remember it. All vocals and leg slapping were recorded inside my truck.
Lyrics:
I've played the king and I've played the fool
But I just can't seem to play it cool
Even when I whisper, the law says it to turn it down
There's a pretty little palette laid out before me
And death's the only thing guaranteed
So I'm living like a devil and hoping for an angel above
A bluesy little 12 bar number of mine. All instruments besides the guitars were homemade, including my cigar box lap drum, penny-and-tomato can snare, and rebuilt foot tambourine. I didn't have an exact artist or song influence this one, but after listening to the finished track a few times, to my ear it's a little Roger Miller and a little Duane Allman. Hope you like it!
Lyrics:
Take all my folding money, honey,
Get a bottle from the liquor store
If there's any change left over,
Go ahead and pick up some more
Because we got time
