Brainiacs: OTERO
In Project: Brainiacs

Beth Kahmann hosts today's Brainiacs show with two guests with brain injuries: Jason is a veteran using transcendental meditation to conquer his anger issues resulting from the brain trauma, and Ron is a TBI survivor in OTERO COUNTY who asserts people in rural counties have difficulty finding experts to provide the correct therapy. Jason recalls his prior plans to commit suicide after exploding vehicles with people his anger was directed at, and what made him decide not to. Beth Kahmann has been on this Brainiacs show twice before, and continues a support group and a radio show especially reaching out to people contemplating suicide. She has received several grants for her work inventing systems to assist people overwhelmed by TBI and life's continuing demands. Ron's issue is completely current as the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado recently identified the need to reach the four corners of the state. BIAC has recently traveled to various rural areas to present programs, and is planning regional conferences. Check the BIAC website at biacolorado.org for upcoming events. Also, recently Judy Dettmer of the Colorado Traumatic Brain Injury Trust Fund recently explained grants to survivors have been reduced to $1000 per person because of limited funding. Dettmer explained that some judges in rural areas have not mandated contributing fees from DUI tickets to the program, mostly because of the poor economy. TBI survivors from all areas can watch Brainiacs shows any time via the internet at www.denveropenmedia.org/project/6254/shows. Speakers from the BIAC conferences are still available in those archives.
