Bernie's Colorado Journeys; visits the Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center - show #43

In this show I wander to the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center. Until 2004, The Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center building was the City Hall, Council Chambers, Police Department, Municipal Court and Jail as well as the Chamber of Commerce office for the city of Cañon City. Along with local pioneer history the Museum displays area natural history including Dinosaur fossils from nearby Garden Park under an agreement with The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management. The fireplace in the 2nd floor DeWeese Gallery was constructed from petrified bones of animals from 40-50 million years ago. Western artist Robert Wesley Amick, a native of Cañon City, painted the backdrop mural framing the exhibit of the Lost Park Mountain Buffalo herd. Also located on the site are an 1860 log cabin and 1881 stone house built for Anson Rudd. The stone house was built using convict labor from the territorial prison and it just so happens that Mr. Rudd was the first elected sheriff of Fremont County.
