Students who survive trauma and abuse are at higher risk for academic deficits. In the South Bronx, Haven Academy works to address the systemic issues that undermine the academic underachievement. By providing a safe and stable environment, Haven helps struggling students who might fall through the cracks in traditional schools. Given the higher rate of familial hardships facing Haven students, the school provides students with counseling, as well as other services. The school has an exceptionally high retention rate of staff.

The Conflict Center offers classes to community members to help them grow their skill set of emotional intelligence. Teaching important communication, and mindfulness skills that support nonviolent resolutions to domestic and work-related conflict.

In Manitou Springs, the Colorado Education initiative is innovating education by incorporating holistic educational practices in the classroom and outside it. Incorporating programs like Partners for Healthy Choices, bringing mindfulness exercises into the classrooms, encouraging physical well being. The Arapahoe County Resource Fair is a place where county residents can come to find a multitude of community resources all under one roof. The department of human services hosts this annual event to showcase services and resources available to anyone who lives in this suburban Denver county. The informal atmosphere creates an environment that allows providers to reach out to community members who may not typically seek services on their own. The event is a highlight of the work the human services department does each year to support vulnerable populations.
