Zebulon Pike traveled the south-central part of today’s Colorado in November of 1806 and is credited for 'discovering' the mountain that would be later named after him, Pikes Peak. Colorado City (now Old Colorado City), initially and briefly known as El Dorado for the mines found during the Colorado gold rush was founded by The Colorado City Town Company that laid claim to two square miles of land that would become Colorado City on May 22, 1859. It was the first capital of the Territory of Colorado, although very short lived, and was the center of early settlement in the Pikes Peak region.
