This month, we have Fort Collins-based band: The Nightshades, and featuring Denver-based Violinist: Monique Brooks Roberts.
The Nightshades’ emergence in the Fort Collins Music scene has been similar to their music: smooth, driving, and precise. Five of the six met in Downtown Artery’s Make More Music Battle, 3 of whom were part of the winning band. Since officially forming in April of 2018, they’ve attracted the attention of many.
All six technically proficient players bring a unique musical taste to the group. The Nightshades blend the sounds of hard rock, metal, jazz, western, and reggae under a large funk rock umbrella. The group takes pride in creating an environment that urges people to shake their bodies. Putting strong intention on the art of composition, the band has given great attention and nuance to each song.
Monique Brooks Roberts is a violinist hailing from Louisville, KY. She recently relocated to Denver from the New Jersey/Philadelphia area. While she is successfully carving out a niche in her own right, her music echoes influences of Sade, Robert Glasper, and Air.
Monique has had a busy and fulfilling career, having performed and recorded for many notable artists including Alicia Keys, Common, Aretha Franklin, and Jill Scott, just to name a few. She has played at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the John F. Kennedy Center, The Kimmel Center, Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, the world famous Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia and plenty more. She’s appeared on many TV programs such as the MTV music awards, NPR’s Tiny Desk, The David Letterman Show, The Stephen Colbert Show, the BET Honors and much more! Monique is set to release her very first solo album titled ‘Free’ on January 31st, 2020! She is intent on making her mark in the soul/jazz fusion world!
