Corrupting Influence of Lobbyist Money on Denver Government & Elections - Commentary
In Project: Community Matters

In April Colorado Public Radio Reporter Ben Markus reported on the influence of lobbyists on Denver policymaking. He noted it is difficult to know where lobbyists end and city government begins. Lobbyists solicit business for their corporate clients, even as they themselves do work for the City, and also give large campaign contributions to City Candidates. CleanSlateNowAction.org lists sources of all contributions to city candidates on their website, demonstrating the disproportionate advantage to incumbents who receive huge contributions from banks, developers, investors, lobbyists and many others interested in achieving a share of profits from development projects in Denver. Unfortunately, City Campaign Finance Reform does not take effect until 2020, so money remains the determining factor in Denver elections. Oil & gas industry have boasted that industry controls 9 of 13 City Council members.
