Field Equipment PoliciesField Equipment Policies



All equipment used under a membership, whether free or at reduced member rates, must be used to create programming that will air on DOM channels.

Once members have been certified by the appropriate class, they are allowed to check-out equipment for free at DOM (membership includes use of one of each of the categories below plus accessories and up to two microphones).

Rental rates are for DOM members who want to check out more equipment than is allowed by their membership. All payments are due up front, and a copy of a credit card and drivers license will be required.

Deproduction and DOM rent out studios and production equipment for commercial use at standard rates. Only non-commercial, public access, creative-commons projects qualify for the free use of equipment and the use of studios at a discounted rate, after certification is complete. If producers want to own exclusive copyrights to their work, or if they want to produce commercial content, they will pay commercial rates for use of studios and equipment.

technical question about canon camera

Hi, When I was using the canon camera, some shots appeared to have lots of diagonal lines in the viewer. They only appeared with there were lighting issues like lots of refelective surfaces or a fire in the shot. We did a lot of adjusting of the iris and shutter to make those disappear, but then the shots turned out dark or yellow. When I looked at the film later on the computer, it seems like the diagonal lines might have not been recorded (but I'm not sure because perhaps we stopped recording until we fixed the lines). Can you tell me whether that light pollution/diagonal lines need to be fixed when filming or will they be resolved when editing? Tanya

The camera provides this "zebra" pattern to let you know which parts of the image are over exposed. SD video only has a contrast ratio (ratio of light to dark) or 40:1, so in this case your image was too contrasty. These lines were not recorded to the tape, but the area occupied by the lines in the viewfinder was too light. You should have received instruction about the zebra pattern prior to your equipment use form DOM staff or trainers. A lot of adjusting of the iris and shutter probably did not help too much - you could have adjusted your lighting to alleviate the contrast problems, but in many cases this cannot be avoided. On the XL1S, try setting the exposure adjustment (camera mode adjustment dial) to the green box for auto exposure, and leave the dials alone until you are more familiar with the camera and what the iris and shutter speed settings are useful for.
