Denver Open Media is sponsoring a Member Collective. This group is open to all DOM members and is meant to be the collective voice of producers in this organization.
The Member Collective is a great place to voice your needs, hopes, concerns and suggestions for Denver Open Media. It is a group made up only of DOM producers and represents the collective voice of producers in this organization. It is your chance to talk with each other about what you want for this organization and then to pass on those suggestions to the staff. This is YOUR organization. The only way to make it successful, and make it reflect what you want it to be, is to get involved! You have power in this organization, but you have to choose to use it.

1. Quality Control: DOM agrees wholeheartedly that it will be necessary to reach a higher level of quality in order to have the impact we all want to have. With our current level of funding, reviewing the content on the station is not an option for our staff. The ONLY viable model right now is depending on an active viewing public to review content, vote on quality, and report errors. If a show is reported as having audio problems, as Nancy described, it will be pulled from the system. if any members have a suggestion for how we could make this work better without increased cost or demand on our tiny staff, we would be overjoyed to hear that. Our vision for quality control without a programming staff depends on the voting model. As viewers watch content on channel 58 and on the website, the leading vote-getters will be programmed on channel 57, which should result in at least one channel with consistent quality. As more content is submitted, the quality of channel 57 should continue to rise.
2. Secured, predicable time-slots: We recognize that a clear time-slot should be guaranteed to producers. Every show submitted is guaranteed one airing. Currently, regular weekly time-slots can be assigned on Channel 58 for any series that has at least two episodes submitted. To arrange for a regular time slot, write or speak to Ann. One-off shows can request a time-slot when they are submitted, and repeat airings are posted at least a week in advance for all to see on the Ch57 and Ch58 schedule.
We plan to revise our programming system to communicate directly with the broadcast servers, allowing producers to secure a specific time-slot for each show when it is submitted. With limited funding for the development of these systems, it will likely be several months before this unprecedented functionality is developed in our open-source, web-based drupal system, unless additional development volunteers or funds are made available.
3. Democratic National Convention: I agree with Johnny that the DNC represents an incredible opportunity for the station. With less than 3 full-time staff members (as compared with over 10 staff members at our predecessor), it is a challenge for us to invest time, money, or energy on it. Any leadership our member-producers can provide in capitalizing on the opportunity the DNC presents is Greatly appreciated. Anything we can do to support you in planning for the DNC, just let us know. I also encourage you to communicate with
4. Production Van: If anyone can generate the estimated $40K/year needed to insure and operate the Production Van, we will do that. To be honest, I do not expect we will ever do that, and I personally consider it a waste of money. The truck has no live uplink ability, and is nothing more than a mobile switch. A much more prudent investment would be a system such as the Sony AnyCast or NewTek Tricaster, both of which which have superior capabilities to the system in the van at a fraction of the price. We have budgeted to purchase a system of this type in late 2008 if the PEG budget allows, hopefully in time for the DNC.
5. Put the Schedule on the station: Nancy requested that we post the schedule. The schedule is posted on the website about a week in advance. If you find any errors or discrepancies in those schedules, we need you to report those as they arise and we will address them. With 2 full-time staff people, we do not have the ability to review the schedule 24/7, but we will respond to any reported problems. I also recognize that many producers would like the schedule posted on the station, or "Coming up Next" slates between shows. We are currently looking for a contractor with the specific skill-set needed to accomplish this with our system (Flash ActionScript), and we hope to have this accomplished by the end of the year. Marcia mentioned that the schedule on the website does not match what is on TV. I believe that all links under the "Watch and Vote" tab (3 of which include the schedule in some form) are accurate.
I believe that Marla and Zimmerman plan to compile the concerns voiced in the past 3 meetings to develop a survey that will help us discern the true priorities of our producer community, which will help us know what projects to devote our limited staff and budget towards. As always, posting comments to this site is another great way to voice your concerns, as are e-mail (for me) and personal interaction with Ann.
We appreciate your involvement with the station and I want you to know that from the perspective of the DOM staff, this station cannot exist without your active, constructive involvement. We hope you will continue to bring your concerns to the staff and to the producer collective.
