Critical Studies of Independent Media

This class is designed to guide students through a critical studies approach to independent media. Through a combination of lecture, discussion and screenings, we will examine the history, cultural impacts and industries, of both American independent film and television. Independent and commercial media history are discussed, with the main focus on the areas of documentary and public access television. There are no requirements for students to take this class. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to analyze film and television productions, and understand the history of the independent industry and its cultural impact.
